I am SO tired. I went and worked out this morning at 5:30, and I am so exhausted.
Anyway, the new RainbowKids server arrived. I am setting it up with Gentoo, and am absolutely amazed at how fast it is with RAID 1.
Anyway, tomorrow is Antonio’s wedding, so I will be sure to take lots of pictures.

Warning! This entry is seriously nerdy.
Anyway, in RKCMS, database portability is one of the key design goals. According to the J2EE Blueprints, the correct way for doing this is with XML driven Generic DAO Impl. I disagree, and the approach I am taking is to create an ANSI impl, and then extend from that a MySQL and PostgreSQL impl, only overriding the bare minimum number of DAO methods. This avoids the overhead of having to parse an XML document into a DOM, etc.
So, for those other nerdy people who read my blog, what do you think?

So, that yellow tag store that has its own customers arrested opened up a new location here in Merced. I went up there tonight with Ryan, and the employees seemed really nice. They didn’t know about the whole video card fiasco, which I happily told them about. At least nobody tried to sell me an extended warranty.
I spent the evening helping Ryan wire up the phone jacks in Love Inc.’s new office. I forgot how bad I am at that… but I did manage to get it all done. And I still have to get up at 5:30 to go work out with him… what a bum deal…
Oh, and Rob changed his mind about the Drew & Mimi thing, so I need a new costume. Any ideas?

Well, I am making good progress on RKCMS… here is a screenshot of the admin console. I’m having lots of fun with it. I love writing software that will save lives. It sure beats working at McDonalds®.
Anyway, I am trying to find a pair of Drew Carey glasses for Halloween. Rob & I are going as Mimi & Drew, respectively. I just can’t wait to see Rob with blue eye shadow. Any leads?

I know… I have been remiss in my blogging duties. Thursday night I was helping Love INC move their offices, and I tripped on the stairs and hurt my ankle really badly. So I pretty much have been completely out of it except for work. Thank goodness for powerful drugs!
RainbowKids CMS is coming along nicely… I am using the latest beta version of IntelliJ to develop it, and I must say that it is absolutely amazing. I have never had an IDE that was as powerful as this one. It truely does make programming a pleasure.
One of the nice things about having a super-leet laptop is that I can do all of my development on the couch. Right now I am watching Sabrina (the 1954 one), and it’s really good. It’s amazing how glamourous Audrey Hepburn was… even more so than Julia Ormond, who played the title role in the 1995 remake.
Anyway, my weekend is pretty much just working on RKCMS and (if I get the necessary information), the Churches of Merced website. Always fun around here, let me tell you.

So, I joined a gym. Please hold all laughter until the end of the blog post.
My friend Ryan asked if I would be his workout partner, and I agreed. It should be a great way for me to get into shape, and if I have a friend doing it with me, I will be much more likely to actually go through with it.
I joined GB3, and am starting on Friday. So, we’ll see how it goes. I got a pretty good deal, actually… $24/month with no contract.

My friend Tara loves quotes, so I decided to find some that would help motivate me and remind me why I am working so hard on RainbowKids, when I already have a full time job, and lots of volunteer projects going…
It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.

I am going to make a difference in this world, because of the love I have for my family and my God. I can’t wait to see what’s out there for me.

Last night I went with Will & Rob to see Kill Bill Vol. 1, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Two things I noticed, though:
- Quentin Tarantino has a serious foot fetish. I wonder how many pairs of women’s shoes he has in his closet at home…
- The MPAA has started deliberately defacing their own films in a futile attempt to control unauthorized duplication. Roger Ebert refers to the large and distracting brownish-red dots as “Crap Code”, and like me, finds it amazing that the MPAA would deliberately deface their own films.
You can see a screen shot of the dots
by clicking here.
Quick Suggestion to the MPAA: You can completely eliminate “unauthorized duplication” of your movies by not distributing them at all! It’s win-win! You don’t have a piracy problem, and we don’t have to endure Ben Affleck & “J-Lo”? in
Gigli.

ARGGHHH!!!!!!!! Now that I have DSL, I am getting started on the CMS software for RainbowKids. My current dilema is that I really would prefer not to write one from scratch.
BUT, all of the stuff out there that is all of the Open Sourced CMS apps written in Java have some severe shortcomings. Things like an incredibly painful templating engine, or a backend that is way more difficult to use than it should be. So, here’s the idea:
I am going to write a new CMS application that utilizes all open sourced technologies. It will run on any compliant servlet container, such as Tomcat or Resin, and will have an open data access layer that will support any JDBC accessible datasource. Initial support is planned for PostgreSQL and MySQL. It will use Velocity for its templating engine.
BUT, I would still prefer to find an existing package and simply shoehorn it for RainbowKids. What to do….

I HAVE DSL!!!
And there was much rejoicing. Okay, here’s the skinny. I have SBC(tm) YAHOO!(R) DSL, which I generally hate, but the good news is that I am getting a full 1.5mbit/sec for only $26.95/mo. Not too shabby…
Of course what kind of stinks is that I couldn’t get the DSL service I wanted, which is actually totally illegal.
Oh well… I’ll just enjoy the bandwidth.
