Sidebar, Meet Tony

John Anderson | July 27, 2007

Hey everyone.  I just wanted to introduce the newest member of my sidebar cavalcade of links, the weblog of Tony McCollum.

Tony & I worked together (and ate lunch together every single day almost) at Elliott Wave International.  He is one of the most insightful, intelligent, and funny people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.

Anyway, he never told me he had a blog, which I just happened to stumble upon from his Facebook profile.  So check it out!

Will It Blend: Bic Lighters

John Anderson | July 26, 2007

Some people might say it’s not a very smart idea to throw 6 lighters into a blender. Those people would be right.

And, as one of the commenters pointed out, “Tom Dickson is the greatest scientist of our times”.  And I have to agree. :-)

HP7 FTW!

John Anderson | July 23, 2007

No, I’m not finished reading it yet, KTHX.  I’ve been so busy with work that I am only halfway done.

Yes, I’ve heard the rumors, and I have to admin, I read the first few chapters earlier this week thanks to the Interweb’s™ leak.

But, so far, so good.  I am happy with the progression, even though I suspect I know the ending.

Lousy newspaper reviewers.

Stupid .com Tricks

John Anderson | July 13, 2007

Ok, so there is plenty of room to improve on the incumbents. I mean, I remember when AltaVista was the ultimate search engine. But when you simply hit up investors for money, saying that you are the new XYZ, you deserve to fail. Case in point? Tagworld.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The truth is that Tagworld offers nothing unique. They basically cloned MySpace, then convinced some gullible investors to give them lots of money. That being said, the above chart makes me smile. I love innovation, but I hate pretenders who are simply hangers on.

So True…

John Anderson |

This was the Quote of the Day today on my iGoogle® home page:

“Thanks to TV and for the convenience of TV, you can only be one of two kinds of human beings, either a liberal or a conservative.” –Kurt Vonnegut

So true.  Sad, but true.

Finally… classic computer time

John Anderson | July 8, 2007

So, as my faithful readers know, I am now beginning to settle down in my new house.  That’s right, our hero has a nice 3 bedroom / 2 bath to occupy.  The master bedroom is mine, and the smallest bedroom is the home theater.  The larger of the guest rooms is configured as just that, a guest bedroom.  But as of tonight, it has a twist.

I have begun to set up my classic computer museum in the guest bedroom.  I determined that I could set up the entire exhibit along the walls, and still offer ample space for a double-sized bed set.

The first models to be displayed?  Naturally, the system I cut my teeth on, and the system I dreamed about while cutting said teeth.  System #1 is a Commodore 128D, complete with an external Commodore 1581 3.5″ Floppy drive.  System #2 is an Amiga 2000HD with an accelerator card and a Video Toaster 3.0.

Naturally, I have numerous other models to exhibit, including a Commodore SX-64 and a Macintosh SE/30.  But right now, I feel I should demonstrate the systems that defined my childhood, and as a result, my career.

Being single sucks…

John Anderson | July 6, 2007

I hate being single. But, in all honesty, from what I hear, being in a relationship sucks even more.

I hear this every day from my offline friends, but even my online friends are not immune.

Maybe I should join some monastery or something. Alternatively, I should re-join the MySpace community…

Oh well… here is my new MySpace profile. Help me not feel so lonely by adding me as your friend.

Woke up this morning, with a wine glass in my hand…

John Anderson | July 5, 2007

Ok, so I have previously blogged about JACK-FM. And to be honest, I’ve been listening contently over the last week, enjoying the unique selection. Nothing spectacular, until my drive home from work today.

As most of you know, traditional “corporate” radio stations play radio mixes, versions of the songs that are tailored to be under 3 minutes long.

On my drive home from work today, JACK-FM played Do You Feel Like We Do? by Peter Frampton. No, not a radio edit. I am talking about the entire 14 minute live performance.

Who cares if JACK-FM means the end of local DJs and local content. If they play full versions of music’s most important content, I’m all over it.
