Great Moments In Software, part 1

John Anderson | August 29, 2007

Unlike most software developers, I have no desire to be a game developer. However, that doesn’t mean I cannot recognize the most amazingly produced games of all time. Top on the list? Blizzard North. But #2, Humongous Entertainment. Case in point? Please enjoy this video.

The Topiary Creatures

This was a random click in a child’s video game… how much attention to detail is that?

I have the most amazing friends!

John Anderson | August 22, 2007

This has been quite a long week. I won’t go into details, but suffice it to say that since our business is growing at a nice 30% per quarter clip, we cannot train and hire people fast enough, which means that we have more than our fair share of disgruntled customers.

But, more importantly, a number of my friends have been running into trouble. Now, that is simply life, but to show how amazing my friends are, they never even chose to open up about their situations. They were happy to be friends, and to keep talking about life. They didn’t want anything from me, nor did they expect me to react in any way.

I am flabbergasted that I am just now hearing about a months-old issue from one of my most amazing friends. When I asked why she didn’t share earlier, she said she didn’t want to burden me. I wanted to yell at her, but that was so amazingly kind. She cared enough about me to hold back her most difficult thoughts and situations… a kind of compassion and care doesn’t come along so often.

I do have some amazing friends, though I hope in the future, they will let me know ASAP when bad things happen!

One More Chance, Mr. Steve Jobs

John Anderson | August 20, 2007

Ok, so you all know how much I hate my Macbook.  I have done nothing but fight AppleCare since it arrived, and in fact, over the last six months, the unit itself has sat in a storage bin in my closet.  When I moved to my new pad, it had upgraded accommodations to a tote in my garage!

Since then, it has been largely ignored, until I realized that I needed a laptop to take with me to our datacenter to roll out our new stealth search product.

So, I’ve made this progress.  First, I have ordered a new hard drive.  AppleCare has given me nonstop shit about trying to get a new drive, so I decided to buy one on my own… I’d rather spend $100 than sit on the phone with some nerd wannabe for 3 hours working on the holy grail of knowledgebase articles.

Step 2:  Replace my own screen.  Yes, I have the PDF of the MacBook service manual.  It makes it much more difficult than the DIY sites out there.

So, who knows what’ll happen.  Please, feel free to place bets with your local bookies.

How others see me…

We all seem self-conscience about our looks, but this is how FedEx sees me

Study: It doesn’t pay to be smart

I’ve often thought that life would be much easier were I to be perfectly content to go home, drink a 6 pack, and cheer on American Idol…

John Anderson | August 10, 2007

F$%* you, The Wall Street Journal

John Anderson | August 5, 2007

Fuck you, The Wall Street Journal.  I have loved reading the FSJ blog, and you had to go and spoil it for everyone.  You petty assholes.  I can’t wait to dismiss you once you are the sworn concubines of Rupert Murdock.

I hate you for ruining the valley’s best destination.

No wonder this house was vacant for so long…

… who could afford the $975/mo rent with this PG&E bill?

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Lord, if this keeps up, I’ll be moving to some kind of studio apartment sooner rather than later. This sucks so much.

EHarmony? Don’t Bother.

John Anderson | August 4, 2007

I joined eHarmony.com.  I’ve met people on there.  But through it all, the only thing have received from that is pain and heartache.

So, for those looking for love, eHarmony seems to only offer pain.  Do yourself a favor… find somewhere else to spend $250 per year.
