Netflix no more

February 11th, 2008

This morning, I cancelled my Netflix account. Their announcement of their intention to stop stocking HD-DVD releases is the main reason I did so. I do own multiple players for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, but the fact of the matter is that there are a number of films that are not available on Blu-Ray that I would like to view, so I’m going to give Blockbuster’s service a try.

Personally, I think that it was a huge mistake for Netflix to stop carrying both formats, and am curious to see if other fellow movie buffs follow suit.

Wow, that’s the end of an era! How long have you had a NetFlix account? Since around 2000, huh?

I applaud your effort and I have joined you in canceling my Netflix account. Other than their decision to stop stocking HD-DVDs, I have been a very happy Netflix customer. I believe it is a mistake for Netflix to ignore their customers. They will get no more of my money or support because of their decision.

Wayyy back in 1998, there was a similar format war that almost killed DVD. The same companies who supported the “rental only” DIVX format now support Sony’s bluray. That tells you all you need to know about the format war.

DVD survived the war and the same companies who now produce HD-DVD will survive as well. I agree, Netflix no more!

I have been very happy with Blockbuster. We joined as a free trial for a market research study, and chose to keep it after. One advantage over Netflix was that instead of only using mail, you can take the DVD sleeve to the store and get a free rental, while you wait for a new one in the mail.
